NFL: Detroit Lions Top 5 Draft Needs

What couldn’t have gone wrong for one of the league’s best teams to only see injuries derail their Super Bowl that they would have won. The one thing that all Super Bowl championship teams have is depth and that was exposed last year for the Lions. So with seven picks this year, the Lions hope to address that. The Lions hold the 28th, 60th, 102nd, 130th, and 196th picks overall which gives them a ton of options to add more depth than a five-layer cake.

Wide Receiver

The Lions already have a great wide receiver core led by the target-mustang himself, Amon-Ra St. Brown. You already know I like Emeka Egbuka at the 28th pick but I could also see Jack Bech being the move here at 60. However, I don’t think the Lions are in the market for a receiver at this stage of the draft so Tory Horton with their 102nd pick makes more sense.

Offensive Line

Being a Rams fan, I know first and foremost that you have to keep Jared Goff clean and upright. Grey Zabel fits right in and if they wanted to wait Emery Jones Jr. would fit in nicely at 60.

Defensive Line

ARLINGTON, TEXAS – OCTOBER 13: Aidan Hutchinson #97 of the Detroit Lions is tended to by medical staff after injuring his leg while recording a sack on Dak Prescott #4 of the Dallas Cowboys in the third quarter of a game at AT&T Stadium on October 13, 2024 in Arlington, Texas. When Aiden Hutchison went down it was like losing one of your sails at sea. Yeah you can navigate but unless you fix that problem or you’ll be all over the place. Derrick Harmon will be sitting right there with a bow-tie if they choose to pull the trigger on this soon-to-be monster of the midway.

Edge

As we focus on these earlier picks for the Lions you can see they have many ways to go and edge rusher Nic Scourton should be available at their 28th pick. They may have a chance at Jack Sawyer with their 60th pick but most likely Kyle Kennard will fall to them at 102. I’m fine with any of these three players being selected if the Lions chose to target this position early.

Safety

Kevin Winston Jr. looks like he’ll be the best available safety when the Lions select at the 60th pick. Since the Lions’ draft position this year really doesn’t work out for them other than Winston. So outside of that, I can see the Lions waiting till their 102nd pick to select Andrew Makuba instead.
